Shouya Ishida was a disruptive elementary school student who went to great lengths to combat boredom. When deaf student Shouko Nishimiya arrived in their class, Shouya and his peers cruelly tormented her for amusement. Once the school was notified by Shouko's mother, Shouya was blamed for all the mistreatment and Shouko was forced to leave the school. Shouya was subsequently shunned by his classmates and endured this throughout elementary and middle school, with no teacher intervention. Now attending his third year of high school, Shouya remains tormented by his past actions. Determined to make amends, he seeks out Shouko in an attempt to reconcile. Koe no Katachi details Shouya's journey of redemption as he faces the lingering consequences of his misconduct. Despite being incessantly plagued by his past, Shouya reunites with Shouko, genuinely seeking to make things right.
